Whole30 Cocktail Sauce for Shrimp and Seafood

A classic appetizer that’s simple and elegant is shrimp cocktail — but when you’re doing a Whole30, finding a compliant cocktail sauce can be surprisingly difficult. Most store-bought cocktail sauces and ketchups include added sugars. This recipe is a Whole30-friendly cocktail sauce you can make quickly at home with easy, store-ready ingredients. It’s bright, tangy, and perfectly balanced to serve with chilled shrimp, crab claws, or as a zesty dip for raw vegetables.

Traditional cocktail sauce relies heavily on sweetened ketchup, and sugar hides in many commercial brands. If you don’t have a sugar-free ketchup like some specialty brands, this sauce replaces that base with simple pantry ingredients: tomato paste and canned tomatoes for body and natural tomato flavor, lemon and vinegar for acidity, garlic and horseradish for punch, and hot sauce for heat. The result is fresh-tasting, slightly textured, and pleasantly spicy — no one will suspect it’s Whole30 compliant.

Prep Time

Ingredients
  1. 2 tbsp. tomato paste
  2. 2 whole peeled canned tomatoes, drained (discard the juice)
  3. 2 tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice
  4. 1 tbsp. distilled white vinegar
  5. 1 clove garlic, peeled
  6. 2.5 tsp. prepared horseradish (adjust to taste)
  7. 5–10 dashes hot sauce (such as Tabasco), to taste
  8. Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Instructions
  1. Combine the tomato paste, drained canned tomatoes, lemon juice, distilled vinegar, garlic clove, prepared horseradish, and hot sauce in a food processor or blender.
  2. Pulse or blend briefly until the tomatoes are pureed and the ingredients are well combined. Aim for a slightly textured sauce rather than fully silky — a bit of body makes for a nicer dip.
  3. Taste and season with salt, pepper, additional lemon, horseradish, or hot sauce according to your preference. If the sauce is too thick, add a teaspoon or two of water or lemon juice to reach your desired consistency.
  4. Chill at least 15–30 minutes before serving so the flavors meld. Serve with cooked, chilled shrimp, crab claws, or raw vegetables for a bright, tangy appetizer.

Notes & Tips

Storage: Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Stir before serving; the texture may firm slightly when chilled.

Heat and intensity: Start with fewer dashes of hot sauce and less horseradish if you prefer a milder sauce. You can always add more to increase the heat. Fresh lemon brightens the flavors — add a little more if the sauce seems heavy.

Texture: If you like a chunkier sauce, pulse briefly in the processor instead of blending continuously. For a smoother finish, blend a little longer but avoid overprocessing if you want some texture.

Substitutions: If you have an approved sugar-free ketchup on hand, you can substitute 3–4 tablespoons of that for the tomato paste and canned tomatoes, then adjust lemon, horseradish, and hot sauce to taste. When using canned tomatoes, choose a good-quality brand with no added sugar or seasonings.

Serving ideas: While this sauce is perfect for chilled shrimp, it also pairs well with crab, lobster, or crisp vegetable crudités. It makes a flavorful, lower-sugar alternative to store-bought cocktail sauces and is ideal for Whole30, paleo, and clean-eating menus.
