Finding Confidence and Beauty After Motherhood

Who would have thought that after having two children and approaching my thirties I would feel more confident and more beautiful than ever? I certainly didn’t expect it. Many people say, “having kids changes your body” and “your body will never be the same.” That’s true—I can point to the stretch marks and the varicose vein I gained during my second pregnancy. Not glamorous, but those marks are part of my story. This is my body, and I choose to accept it. You can accept yours, too.
Start with Acceptance
We all struggle with self-confidence at times. The first step toward real confidence is accepting that perfection isn’t attainable—and it’s not the goal. If you’re upset about past choices, forgive yourself and move forward. Turn off the unrealistic images that tell you how you should look. Those magazine ideals are not the benchmark of a meaningful life. Instead, ask yourself: am I being the best version of me? Am I taking care of my health, eating well, and treating others with kindness? Those are the questions that lead to lasting self-worth.
Confidence Grows with Wisdom
I believe confidence is closely tied to wisdom, and wisdom comes with time and experience. Motherhood reshaped my priorities. What once felt crucial began to feel trivial. If I could speak to my younger, pre-baby self, I’d tell her she was beautiful and that she should stop obsessing over other people’s opinions. Back then, I let other people’s judgments define me. I rarely asked, “What do I think of myself?” or “Am I proud of who I’ve become?”
Worrying about what others think dims your true beauty. The intentions you set—how you care for yourself and how you treat others—are what show up in everyday life. There is a special kind of radiance that comes from believing in yourself. Find what makes you feel beautiful, and commit to it. Below are the practical things that helped me feel more authentically beautiful, and the advice I would give my high-school self.
- Self-care. I prioritize nourishing foods and consistent movement. Exercise and yoga make me feel grounded and energetic. Discover what habits make your body and mind thrive, then be consistent with them.
- Be yourself. Dress for your unique shape and comfort rather than for fleeting trends. In high school I chased styles that didn’t flatter my figure. Today I wear what makes me feel confident—jeans, a simple tee, a fun pair of shoes, and a swipe of lipstick can lift my mood and make me feel ready for the day. Choose clothing that reflects who you are and how you want to feel.
- Choose compassion. Let go of negative energy and refrain from participating in mean-spirited conversations. If you find yourself at a gathering where people criticize someone’s appearance, redirect the conversation toward kindness. You never know someone’s struggles, and responding with empathy reveals true beauty. A compassionate heart is incredibly attractive. If you slip up, forgive yourself and set a clear intention to respond differently next time.

Supporting Others on the Journey
Recently a fellow blogger and follower reached out to tell me about an initiative she launched in Chicago, and her story moved me. Jacqueline Gould, a self-worth advocate and wellness practitioner, founded Your Inner Babe after years of struggling with confidence through high school and college. She saw many professionals and still felt isolated. Now she says that if she had someone back then who truly understood her experience—someone who could meet her eyes and relate—her journey might have felt less lonely. That insight inspired her to create a space where women of all ages can confront their inner struggles and reclaim their confidence.
I’m proud to support Jacqueline’s work and to wear her #babe hat as a declaration: I am proud to be myself, imperfections and all. You, too, can discover confidence by practicing self-acceptance, making choices that make you proud, and treating others with kindness. Those actions help you radiate authenticity.
How to Let Your Beauty Radiate
Identify the small or significant changes that help your inner and outer self align. Set intentions to be positive, take care of your body and mind, and show compassion. When you live intentionally—prioritizing self-care, being true to your style, and choosing empathy—your natural beauty will shine through. We all have the capacity to grow in confidence; it starts with acceptance and continues with daily choices that reflect who we want to be.
Accept yourself. Make decisions you can be proud of. Be kind to others. Do those things, and you will radiate a kind of beauty that goes well beyond the surface.
