Prosciutto, Pear and Arugula Appetizer Rolls

Prosciutto, Pear, and Arugula Rolls

When I host a gathering but want to keep things light and elegant, these Prosciutto, Pear, and Arugula Rolls are my go-to appetizer. They’re simple to prepare, look beautiful on a platter, and disappear almost immediately. A few slices of ripe pear, a handful of peppery arugula, and thin slices of prosciutto are all you need to assemble bite-sized rolls that deliver a perfect balance of sweet, salty, and fresh.

Finishing each roll with a drizzle of good aged balsamic vinegar elevates the flavors and adds a glossy sweet-tart note that complements the prosciutto and pear. Not all balsamic vinegars are created equal: regular balsamic is lighter and more suitable for vinaigrettes, while a true aged balsamic tends to be thicker with a richer, more complex flavor and a syrupy texture. If you want to avoid added sugars, look for naturally dense, well-aged balsamic that lists few ingredients. It will cost more, but a small amount goes a long way and it pairs beautifully with cheese, fruit, and cured meats.

Some aged balsamic options I like to mention (product names only, no links):

  • Oliver 25-year barrel-aged balsamic vinegar — a rich, deeply flavored choice that’s often recommended as a special-occasion bottle. Note: if you are following Whole30, check the label for sulfites; some aged balsamics can contain sulfites and would not be compliant.
  • Seggiano Organic Super Dense Balsamic Glaze — a condensed-style balsamic that achieves thickness naturally; many versions avoid added thickeners and sulfites. Look for a product with minimal ingredients if you prefer a clean option.

Below is a clear, easy-to-follow recipe for Prosciutto, Pear, and Arugula Rolls that you can assemble in minutes. They’re ideal for parties, holiday gatherings, or any time you want a quick yet impressive appetizer. Feel free to adapt the fillings — a little crumble of blue cheese or goat cheese adds creaminess, while a squeeze of lemon on the arugula brightens the flavor.

Platter of prosciutto pear arugula rolls

A fast, elegant appetizer combining sweet pear, salty prosciutto, and peppery arugula — ready in about 10 minutes.
Total Time
10 minutes
Ingredients
  1. 1 ripe pear, cored and cut into 10 long, thin slices
  2. 10 slices of prosciutto
  3. A small handful of baby arugula
  4. Good aged balsamic vinegar, for drizzling
  5. Optional: crumbled gorgonzola or goat cheese
Instructions
  1. Lay a slice of prosciutto flat. Place one slice of pear across the prosciutto, add a couple of arugula leaves, and sprinkle with a small amount of crumbled cheese if using. Leave a bit of the pear and arugula sticking out so the roll will look attractive when cut.
  2. Roll the prosciutto tightly around the pear and arugula. If desired, trim the roll in half so each piece becomes a small, two-bite morsel.
  3. Arrange the rolls on a serving platter. Just before serving, lightly drizzle with good aged balsamic vinegar for a glossy finish and balanced sweetness.
  4. Serve immediately and enjoy.

Tips and variations:

  • Choose pears that are ripe but still firm so they slice cleanly without becoming mushy. Bartlett, Bosc, or Conference pears all work well when firm.
  • If you prefer a milder cheese, use a soft goat cheese; for a bolder note, try a small crumble of blue or gorgonzola. Cheese is optional — the combination of pear, prosciutto, and balsamic is delicious on its own.
  • For a lighter option, skip the cheese and use just pear, arugula, and prosciutto. If you’re following a specific diet like Whole30, check product labels for sulfites or added sugars in bottled balsamics.
  • To prepare ahead, slice the pears and keep them in a bowl of cold water with a little lemon juice to prevent browning; assemble the rolls shortly before serving so the prosciutto stays tender and the arugula stays crisp.
  • Presentation matters: arrange the rolls neatly on a wooden board or white platter and drizzle the balsamic at the last moment to keep the prosciutto from becoming soggy.

These Prosciutto, Pear, and Arugula Rolls are an effortless way to impress guests while keeping prep time minimal. They balance sweet fruit, salty cured meat, peppery greens, and the bright depth of aged balsamic — an appetizer that feels special but takes almost no time to make.
