One of my favorite strategies for easy, satisfying family dinners—especially on busy nights—is a build-your-own bowl. These Mediterranean-Inspired Turkey Meatball Bowls are a fun, flavorful take on that idea. They’re interactive, customizable, and designed to please even picky eaters while keeping prep simple and dinner time relaxed.

Build-your-own bowl nights work well because everyone assembles their plate exactly how they like it. I lay out the full spread family-style—rice, warm turkey meatballs, a creamy tahini drizzle, and a variety of fresh Mediterranean-style toppings—and let each person choose. Kids often surprise me with combinations they love, and it keeps the mood around the table cheerful and relaxed.

For these bowls I used Shady Brook Farms 93% Lean / 7% Fat Ground Turkey to create meatballs that are both tender and full of Mediterranean spice. I added herbs, toasted sesame, and a touch of tahini directly into the meatballs for extra flavor and a slightly nutty finish. The meatballs bake in the oven—hands-off cooking that leaves you time to prepare the rice and toppings.

This build-your-own bowl format is easy to scale, quick to make, and forgiving to prep ahead. The meatballs and rice can be made in advance and reheated when you’re ready to serve—then simply arrange the toppings and let everyone assemble their own bowl. It’s a great solution for weeknights, casual gatherings, or when you want a balanced dinner without fuss.
I love how the tahini drizzle ties everything together—creamy, brightened with lemon, and thinned to the perfect pourable consistency. Use warm water a tablespoon at a time to get the drizzle to the thickness you prefer.

Instructions
Make the Rice
- Heat a saucepan over medium heat and melt the butter. Add the shallot and garlic and cook, stirring, until tender, about 3 minutes.
- Add the lemon zest, rice, salt, and turmeric. Toast the rice, stirring, until fragrant and lightly browned, about 4 minutes.
- Pour in the chicken broth and bring to a boil. Once boiling, stir, reduce the heat to a gentle simmer, cover, and cook for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and keep covered for 10 minutes to finish steaming.
Make the Meatballs
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, ground coriander, cumin, allspice, paprika, toasted sesame seeds, tahini, dill, and parsley. Mix until evenly combined.
- Roll the mixture into 1-inch meatballs and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Bake until cooked through and golden on top, 15–18 minutes.
Make the Tahini Drizzle and Assemble
- In a small bowl, whisk the tahini and lemon juice together. Add warm water, 1 tablespoon at a time, and whisk until you reach a pourable consistency.
- To serve, spoon lemon-turmeric rice into bowls, top with warm turkey meatballs, drizzle with tahini, and offer a selection of toppings so everyone can build their own bowl.
Make-ahead tip: The rice and meatballs can be prepared earlier in the day and reheated gently before serving. Store components separately for best texture.
