How to Make an Espresso Martini

Raise a glass to the season with a classic Espresso Martini — a cold, coffee-forward cocktail that balances bold espresso, coffee liqueur, smooth vodka, and a touch of simple syrup. This version is one of my favorites year-round, but it especially shines during the holidays when a little caffeine and a bit of sparkle are welcome. It’s perfect to start an evening, enjoy with dessert, or savor as a pick-me-up after dinner.

The Espresso Martini is traditionally served chilled in a martini glass or coupe. Although it may seem odd to combine hot espresso with ice and other cold ingredients, the brief heat helps produce the glossy crema and froth that define this cocktail. Shake vigorously until the shaker is icy cold, and you’ll be left with a silky, chilled drink crowned by a rich foam.

Ingredients

  • 3 oz vodka (about two large jiggers; a clean, neutral vodka works best)
  • 1 oz Kahlúa (or another coffee liqueur)
  • 1 oz simple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • 1.5 oz hot espresso (freshly brewed)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step One: Combine Ingredients in a Shaker

Fill a cocktail shaker with plenty of ice. Add the vodka, Kahlúa, simple syrup, and the hot espresso. Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for at least 20 seconds, until the exterior of the shaker feels very cold. This vigorous shaking chills the drink and emulsifies the espresso to form a creamy foam.

Step Two: Strain and Serve

After shaking, place a strainer over the shaker and pour the cocktail through a fine sieve if you prefer an extra-smooth texture. Serve immediately in a chilled martini glass or coupe. The top should display a glossy, espresso-colored foam. Garnish simply with three espresso beans or leave it unadorned — both look and taste excellent.

Tips & Variations

  • For an extra-chilly presentation, place martini glasses in the freezer for 10–15 minutes before serving, or fill glasses with ice while you prepare the drinks and empty them just before pouring.
  • If you prefer slightly more sweetness, increase the simple syrup by 1/4 oz. For a drier cocktail, reduce the syrup slightly.
  • Try different coffee liqueurs or a touch of flavored syrup (vanilla or hazelnut) for a seasonal twist.
  • To maintain the best foam, shake two drinks at a time rather than shaking a large batch all at once. Espresso Martinis are at their best when freshly made.

Recipe FAQs

Should I use hot espresso?

Yes. Adding hot espresso to the other cold ingredients and then shaking helps create a glossy, stable foam while the final drink remains chilled.

How can I make the martini extra cold?

Chill your glasses in the freezer or fill them with ice while you mix the drink, removing the ice just before pouring. Also, use plenty of ice in the shaker and shake until the shaker is very cold.

Can I batch-make these?

Espresso Martinis are best shaken in small batches (one or two at a time) to preserve the foam and texture. Large batches tend to lose the frothy topping and fresh espresso character.

Enjoy this Espresso Martini with friends and family — it’s a refined, energizing cocktail that works any time you want the lift of espresso with a touch of holiday glamour. If you like experimenting, try swapping the liqueur or adding a flavored syrup for new seasonal variations.

Servings: 2 Drinks

Ingredients

  • 3 oz vodka (about two large jiggers)
  • 1 oz Kahlúa (coffee liqueur)
  • 1 oz simple syrup
  • 1.5 oz hot espresso (freshly brewed)

Instructions

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add vodka, Kahlúa, simple syrup, and hot espresso.
  2. Seal the shaker and shake vigorously until the shaker is very cold (about 20 seconds).
  3. Strain through the shaker strainer and, if desired, through a fine mesh sieve. Pour into chilled martini glasses and serve immediately.

Notes

Using hot espresso helps create a rich foam when shaken with ice. Straining through a sieve yields a smoother, frothier top without bits of ice.
